Washington Electric Vehicle Rebates, Tax Credits & Eligibility

Published on Sep 23, 2024 by Titus-Will Creative Team

If you’re a resident of the state of Washington, then there has never been a better time to consider getting behind the wheel of your very own electric vehicle. As the automotive industry turns more and more towards electrification each year, the entire country continues to encourage shoppers to jump on the bandwagon. In an effort to help sway more car shoppers to make the switch to electric vehicles, both the federal and many state governments are offering vehicle rebates and tax credits. Today we’ll dive into some of these enticing offers and analyze the eligibility requirements therein.

What offers are available to Washingtonians?

There are four different types of electric vehicle sales that have available rebates and tax credits. First and foremost, you can purchase a new electric vehicle to receive a very respectable rebate and tax credit from Washington and the federal government respectively. Purchasing a new EV outright will net you a $5,000 instant rebate in Washington, as well as an IRA federal tax credit ranging from $3,750 to $7,500 depending on output.

Alternatively you could lease a new EV. If you lease a new electric vehicle with a term of 24 to 35 months, you can once again net $5,000 from Washington and $7,500 from federal, for a total of $12,500. The most lucrative path, however, is to lease an EV with a term of 36 months or more, as that will net you the usual federal $7,500 tax credit, but a whopping $9,000 instant rebate from Washington state.

If you’re not interested in a new electric vehicle but have your eyes set on a pre-owned EV, you’re still in luck. Whether you purchase or lease a used vehicle, you’ll get $2,500 from Washington in addition to a $4,000 IRA federal tax credit.

Next up you’ll need to register the electric vehicle for personal use at your home address with the Washington Department of Licensing.

Finally, you just have to make sure that you and/or your household meet the income eligibility requirements. If you’re the only person in your household, your income cannot exceed $45,180. If your household includes one other person, then your total household income cannot exceed $61,320. This continues on, with the income threshold increasing by $16,140 with each additional person in the household, up to a total of eight people at $158,160.
